The grueling demands of medical training have long cast a shadow over student mental health, but the FUHSIMSA Welfare Committee (2025/2026) refused to let the silence continue. In a massive bid to break stigmas, the Office of the Welfare Secretary successfully organized "Saving the Medic," an intensive three-day virtual workshop focused on suicide prevention and awareness in medical school. Spanning from Friday, January 23rd to Sunday, January 25th, 2026, the event served as a practical guide to suicide awareness, crisis intervention, and coping with academic failure.
The virtual initiative brought together a diverse, global audience of medical students and health-related peers eager for real solutions. Attendees were privileged to learn from a stellar panel of prominent speakers, featuring Keynote Speaker Prof. Taiwo Lateef Sheikh (Professor of Psychiatry, ABU), alongside Dr. Olayemi Zainab Oduola (Sub-Dean Students' Affairs, FUHSI & Counselling Psychologist), Ekundayo Ayomide Samson (Orius Mental Health Fellow '24), and Dorcas Olamide Sawyerr (Co-founder Soro).
To cap off this historic, life-saving event, participating students received official certificates of attendance, solidifying a collective community commitment to peer support and mental resilience.
